Where are the angry balloons ? by Phage (2.00 / 0) #1 Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 07:35:08 AM EST
They're all so bloody cheerful. It's like being at Disney on Acid.

That might qualify as Third Worst Trip Ever. Right after "Hospital on Acid" and "Jail on Acid".

WIPO: joke science by Rogerborg (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 08:30:59 AM EST
Still, I expect the fat lazy fucks need a good laugh to counterbalance the crippling depression and well deserved sense of worthlessness.

That's right by Bob Abooey (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 09:27:23 AM EST
If they would take the time they spend trying to explain why they're being overweight is not their fault, and use it working out at the gym instead, maybe they wouldn't have to worry about it.

Drugs that block the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A are associated with weight gain, and in animals stimulating the receptor causes weight loss, suggesting that this receptor plays a role in regulating body weight

Sure, if you're a stupid rabbit you spend your whole like acting on impulse, but we humans actually have brains which tell us "Eating a case of fudge brownie mix is the wrong thing to do" regardless of the level of serotonin in your brain.

Warmest regards,
--Your best pal Bob

Those are some serious balloons. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #7 Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 12:43:21 PM EST
Won't catch me making anything that complicated though - when the kids are lining up, it's poodles for everybody!

That fat article was odd though - it seemed to be the opposite result from what they expected - if blocking the receptor is associated with obesity, you'd think fat people would have fewer receptors, not more.

Receptors by dn (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 09:41:30 PM EST
The number of receptors is usually affected by the level of stimulation. If they are understimulated (equivalent to being blocked), more receptors will be installed in the cell membrane to partially compensate. It's one of the ways the brain stays in equilibrium.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #9 Tue Jun 13, 2006 at 07:39:57 AM EST
That could be the explanation but it's still not straight forward; it implies that despite the compensation the brain still isn't getting enough without additional external stimuli.

huh. Now that I say it out loud, I suppose that's the whole point, isn't it?
