Latest Dresden Files was book 6: Blood Rites. This one involves White Court vampires and the porn industry. White Court vampires feed on sexual energy so it makes sense. Ramps up the angst slightly after the last one: gets a bit Stephen Donaldson at the end as Harry ends up with a crippled hand, is marked by a demon, which gives him dangerous and unstable power.
Pacey as ever: for light reading can't recommend this series enough.
What I'm Reading 2
Another comic from Alan Moore's ABC series:
Tomorrow
Stories book 2. Didn't really get into this one. Goes a bit too far
into retro-stylings and ironic comics self-referentiality. Also it's mostly
divided up into little storylines only a few pages long, so there isn't really
any narrative impetus. Not really worth bothering with.
Being a glutton for punishment though, I borrowed "Terra Obscura Book 2", another one in the same line.
What I'm Reading 3
Dresden Files book 7 was
Dead Beat.
One of the best yet: an apocalyptic air, some interesting character development
and several of the plot strands
from previous books coming together.
Nice use of foreshadowing too, with plot elements from the start clicking
together satisfactorily. And the title is magnificently punny
it turns out that to animate zombies you have to continuously beat
a drum. The ending with Harry Dresden riding a zombie tyrannosaurus called
Sue into battle against a horde of zombie humans is just excellent
I think that might be the last one the library has in stock: may have to start buying the next few. I think there are only ten books so far though.
Managed to snag Book 2: Fool Moon which I omitted though, so I've got that to keep the fix going.
What I'm Watching
Saw "28 Weeks Later" at the cinema.
Not quite as good as the first one, but still very good.
Quite a relief to see a film that's not got a hopeless bloated
running time: at a brisk 99 minutes keeps the tension high.
Political subtext isn't overstated either.
The plot is very heavily foreshadowed, which I actually liked: I thought there was a nice sense of doomed inevitability as the child-lets-in-infection plot from the beginning was repeated on a bigger scale at the end. Other reviews complain that that makes it 'too predictable' though.
Overall, well worth seeing. Review, review.
Theatre
Went to see
The 39 Steps
at the Criterion. Absolutely superb. It's a comic take on the classic Thirties thriller.
Tongue-in-cheek but very fast moving. The staging is incredible: four people take
on a huge number of rows, often changing roles dozens of times with split-second
timing within a single scene. You have to see it to believe it.
It manages to recreate scenes from the film with hugely imaginative use of
a handful of simple props.
Also, hysterically funny. You must see this one if you get half a chance.
Embourgeoisification
Gave in and bought a bunch of stuff at the
Farmer's Market: lamb
chops, steak and kidney pie, peas, tomatoes, spring onions, potatoes.
To be fair, it is within walking distance (9AM to 2PM on Saturdays)
and I do actually have to walk through it to get to Morrisons
(the nearest supermarket).
Seems pretty expensive, though I don't tend to notice the price so much in a supermarket since you don't have to dig into your wallet for each item. People keep saying it's cheaper, but I think that must be compared to super-premium organic Marks and Spencers type stuff. Will report back on whether it tastes any different. Presumably it's good for keeping the food miles down and the farmers less suicidal anyway.
Update [2007-6-16 12:11:35 by TheophileEscargot]: Whoa, embourgeoisification seems to be an actual word. Guardian, FoE on farmers markets.
ODGF
Weight's definitely been creeping up. Problem with my very mild
weightlifting is that it's hard to be sure what's muscle and what's
fat. I can still fit into the same trousers, but they feel slightly
tighter and I feel slightly wobblier when I run.
On the other hand, I get hungry if I try to restrict calories
further. Might have to start going for extreme measures.
Seriously considering reducing my alcohol intake to an even lower
level than 28 units per week, at least temporarily.
